Maroniteparchy

The three Sundays preceding the Great Lent are of great Christian antiquity. From her roots in the ancient Western Syriac-Antiochian tradition, the Maronite Church prepares for Lent with a prolonged hymn to God’s mercy. Under the influence of St. Ephrem of Syria, the Maronite Church imitated the monastic way of celebrating the Mercy of God by the tradition of reading the list of the dead (necrology). These Sundays (for the priests, the foreigners and the faithful) therefore are meant to stir up within us a great confidence in God’s mercy so that we may live the Great Lent with a true spirit of repentance.
