It is with great joy and hearts filled with tireless hope that we, children of the Maronite Church—an Eastern Catholic Patriarchal Church—in deep love and full communion with the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church, announce the election of the new Pope, Leo XIV, successor of Peter, head of the Catholic Church, shepherd of the flock, and guardian of the Body of Christ in the world.

 

Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth to people of good will!

 

The election of the new Pontiff Leo XIV echoes within us as a living word of Jesus: "And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age." It is a visible sign of the Holy Spirit’s work in the Church and of God's unwavering faithfulness through the generations. In these times, marked by uncertainty, numerous challenges, and rapid changes, this event emerges like late-season rain, a new dawn heralding a renewal of hope, love, and unity.

 

For us Maronites, a Patriarchal Eastern Church at the heart of the East, bearers of an ancient heritage and animated by total devotion to Jesus Christ and the universal Church, this election brings new hope to our wounded East, an overflow of love to be invested. A love for the Church that is not a choice, but the very essence of our vocation and the mystery of our mission. We are a Church rooted in the rock, journeying through mountains and valleys, through exile and trials, remaining faithful – with our sister churches – to our tradition and our ancestral Catholic faith.

 

From the beloved land of Cyprus, an island that has welcomed us for centuries and unites in its soil the voice of the East and the whisper of the West, we lift our fervent prayers to God. We, His people and citizens, Maronites since the 7th century, offer our filial obedience and love to the new Pope, our Holy Father Leo XIV, asking the Holy Spirit to grant him wisdom, discernment, gentleness, and courage to guide the Church on the path of holiness, truth, hope, and mercy.

 

Today, with the whole world – believers and non-believers, with all who seek light and truth – we celebrate our joy. The election of a new Pope, in addition to being for every believer a living expression of God’s action at the heart of the world and of the Church’s constant renewal under the guidance of the Good Shepherd, is a new call to collaborate with all people of goodwill to safeguard human dignity and work for the common good.

So, to all of you, we proclaim:

 

We love you, living Jesus,

We love your holy Church,

We love the one your Spirit has consecrated holy among us.

 

As Maronites, we proclaim our faith, our devotion, and our fidelity at the heart of the Church – the Church of unity, forgiveness, and witness.

 

May the new Pope be a voice of peace, a bridge of unity, a support for the poor, a loving father to his people and to all peoples.

 

Glory to God in the highest, peace on earth, and to the united Church, in heart and word, glory and praise forever and ever. Amen.

Père saint, Toi qui conduis Ton Église avec Ta sollicitude et qui veilles sur elle avec Ton amour,
nous Te demandons de répandre sur les cardinaux réunis à Rome l’esprit de sagesse, de discernement et de paix.
Éclaire leurs cœurs avec la lumière de l’Esprit Saint, afin qu’ils comprennent Ta volonté et œuvrent pour le bien de l’Église universelle.
Unis-les dans l’amour, afin qu’ils choisissent le pape que Tu veux pour Ton Église en ce temps,
successeur de Pierre, pour continuer la mission du Bon Pasteur, que Ton Fils Jésus-Christ a confiée à Pierre, chef des apôtres, en gardant l’unité de la foi et la communion ecclésiale.

Άγιε Πατέρα, Εσύ που καθοδηγείς την Εκκλησία Σου με την πρόνοιά Σου και την φροντίζεις με την αγάπη Σου,
Σε παρακαλούμε να χαρίσεις στους Καρδιναλίους που είναι συγκεντρωμένοι στη Ρώμη το Πνεύμα της σοφίας, της διάκρισης και της ειρήνης.
Φώτισε τις καρδιές τους με το φως του Αγίου Πνεύματος, ώστε να κατανοήσουν το θέλημά Σου και να εργαστούν για το καλό της Καθολικής Εκκλησίας.
Ενωσέ τους στην αγάπη, ώστε να επιλέξουν τον Πάπα που Εσύ επιθυμείς για την Εκκλησία Σου σε αυτήν την εποχή,
για τον Πέτρο, ώστε να συνεχίσει την αποστολή του Καλού Ποιμένα, την οποία παρέδωσε ο Υιός Σου, ο Ιησούς Χριστός, στον Πέτρο, τον αρχηγό των Αποστόλων, διατηρώντας την ενότητα της πίστης και της εκκλησιαστικής κοινωνίας.

Αναπέμπουμε την ικεσία μας σε Εσένα, με τη μεσιτεία της Παναγίας μας, Βασίλισσας των Αποστόλων, και όλων των Αγίων που υπηρέτησαν την Εκκλησία με πίστη και αγιότητα, και ήταν φως στους δρόμους των πιστών.

Holy Father, You who guide Your Church with Your care and watch over her with Your love, we ask You to pour out upon the Cardinals gathered in Rome the spirit of wisdom, discernment, and peace.

Enlighten their hearts with the light of the Holy Spirit, that they may understand Your will and act for the good of the universal Church.
Unite them in love, that they may choose the Pope whom You desire for Your Church in this time, to succeed Peter and continue the mission of the Good Shepherd, which Your Son Jesus Christ entrusted to Peter, the head of the Apostles, preserving the unity of faith and ecclesial communion.

We lift up our supplication to You through the intercession of our Mother Mary, Queen of the Apostles, and all the saints who faithfully and holily served the Church, becoming a light on the paths of the faithful.

We ask You, O Lord.

Αγαπητά εν Χριστώ αδέλφια,

«Ω Δημιουργέ της Ζωής, μας έσωσες με το Πάθος Σου και μας έδωσες ζωή με την ανάστασή Σου. Τώρα ανανέωσε την εικόνα μας με τη χάρη Σου. Ντύσε τα σώματά μας με τη δύναμη του Πνεύματος, ώστε να λάμψουμε στο ένδυμα της δόξας και στο φως του να δούμε εσένα,τοναληθινό Νυμφίο.»- HESED

Η Μαρωνίτικη Λειτουργία επαναλαμβάνει αυτή την Κυριακή τις ίδιες υπέροχες προσευχές της Κυριακής του Πάσχα. Μέχρι την Πέμπτη της Αναλήψεως, θα ψάλλουμε επανειλημμένα αυτή την τρομερή Αλήθεια: Ο Χριστός αναστήθηκε από τους νεκρούς, αληθινά, ο Κύριος αναστήθηκε.

Οι αφηγήσεις για εκείνη την πρώτη Κυριακή του Πάσχα, που καταγράφηκαν με πολύτιμο τρόπο από τους ευαγγελιστές και εμπνεύστηκαν από το Άγιο Πνεύμα, αποτυπώνουν όλη τη σύγχυση και την αναστάτωση εκείνης της ημέρας. Και δικαίως! Ποτέ δεν υπήρξε μια μέρα σαν εκείνη την Κυριακή του Πάσχα σε ολόκληρη την ιστορία της ανθρωπότητας. Ο κόσμος είναι γεμάτος από ταφόπλακες, αλλά υπάρχει μόνο ένας άδειος τάφος. Είναι μια από τις αποδείξεις της Ανάστασης, ότι οι μαθητές απλώς δεν περίμεναν την επιστροφή του Χριστού από τους νεκρούς. Δημοσιεύουν ταπεινά τη δυσπιστία τους και την πλήρη έλλειψη πίστης τους. Αν η ανάσταση ήταν ένα κατασκεύασμα της φαντασίας τους ή μια μεγάλη συνωμοσία, θα είχαν φροντίσει να παρουσιαστούν με καλύτερο τρόπο.

Σκεφτείτε τους δύο μαθητές στο Ευαγγέλιο αυτής της Κυριακής. Πηγαίνουν προς την Εμμαούς, καταβεβλημένοι και καταθλιπτικοί. Είναι στα πρόθυρα της απελπισίας. Είχαν χάσει τα πάντα τη Μεγάλη Παρασκευή. Όλα είχαν καταρρεύσει μπροστά στα μάτια τους. Είδαν τον ηγέτη τους να καταδικάζεται ως εγκληματίας, βλάσφημος και εχθρός του λαού.
Δεν υπήρχε τίποτα στο λεξιλόγιό τους που να παραπέμπει έστω και στο ότι ο Μεσσίας καταστράφηκε και αναστήθηκε από τους νεκρούς. Πώς λοιπόν έφτασαν να πιστέψουν κάτι που ήταν εντελώς αντίθετο με τις ιουδαϊκές πεποιθήσεις τους; Η μόνη εξήγηση που βγάζει νόημα είναι ότι βίωσαν τον Χριστό- Τον συνάντησαν στη δοξασμένη Του πραγματικότητα.

Είθε αυτή η ευαγγελική διήγηση να φέρει τον καθένα μας σε μια νέα συνάντηση με τον Αναστημένο Ιησού. Περπατάει δίπλα στον καθένα από εμάς κάθε μέρα και το μόνο που χρειάζεται είναι να Του ζητήσουμε «να μείνει μαζί μας γιατί κοντεύει να βραδιάσει και η μέρα κοντεύει να τελειώσει». Σύντομα θα φύγουμε από αυτή τη ζωή, και αν περπατήσαμε μαζί Του σε αυτόν τον κόσμο, θα χαρούμε μαζί Του στον επόμενο. Αμήν.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

“O Creator of Life, you have saved us by your Passion and have given us life by your resurrection. Now renew our image by your grace. Clothe our bodies with the power of the Spirit, so that we may shine in the robe of glory and in its light see you, the true Bridegroom.” – HESED

The Maronite Liturgy repeats this Sunday the same wonderful prayers of Easter Sunday. All the way to Ascension Thursday, we will sing repeatedly this tremendous truth, Christ has risen from the dead, truly, the Lord is risen.

The accounts of that first Easter Sunday, preciously recorded by the evangelists, and inspired by the Holy Spirit, capture all the confusion and upheaval of that day. And rightly so! There has never been a day like that Easter Sunday in the entire history of mankind. The world is full of tombstones but there is only one empty tomb. It is one of the proofs of the Resurrection, that the disciples simply did not expect the return of Christ from the dead. They humbly publish their incredulity, and their complete lack of faith. If the resurrection had been a construction of their imagination or a grand conspiracy, they would have taken better care to portray themselves in a better light.

Consider the two disciples in the Gospel of this Sunday. They are making their way to Emmaus, downcast and depressed. They are on the verge of despair. They had lost everything on Good Friday. It had all collapsed before their very eyes. They saw their leader condemned as a criminal, a blasphemer, and an enemy of the people. There was nothing in their vocabulary to even hint at the Messiah being destroyed and being raised from the dead. How than did they come to believe something that was completely contrary to their Jewish beliefs? The only explanation that makes any sense is they experienced Christ; they met Him in his glorified reality.

May this gospel account bring each of us to a new encounter with the Risen Jesus. He walks beside each of us every day and we need only to ask Him “to stay with us because it is almost evening and the day is almost over.” Soon we shall leave this life, and if we have walked with Him in this world, we will rejoice with Him in the next.

«Κύριε Ιησού, κάνε μας άξιους να γιορτάσουμε με πνευματικούς ύμνους την εμφάνισή Σου στον Θωμά και τους αποστόλους Σου. Επιθυμούσες να ενδυναμώσεις την πίστη της Αγίας Εκκλησίας Σου προσκαλώντας τον Θωμά να βάλει το χέρι του στην αγνή πλευρά Σου».
Εισοδική Προσευχή

Έχουν περάσει οκτώ ημέρες από τον εορτασμό της Κυριακής του Πάσχα. Σε αυτό το σημαντικό επετειακό έτος της λύτρωσης, μοιραστήκαμε με χαρά με τους Ορθόδοξους αδελφούς και αδελφές μας στην κοινή ημερομηνία του Πάσχα, την εορτή των εορτών. Όμως οι φετινές εορταστικές εκδηλώσεις γνώρισαν τη σκιά της θλίψης με τον θάνατο του αγαπημένου μας Αγίου Πατέρα, Πάπα Φραγκίσκου. Αν και ο θάνατός του δεν αποτέλεσε έκπληξη, η αναχώρησή του από εμάς στον Οίκο του Πατέρα ήταν πράγματι μια ευκαιρία να νιώσουμε τη θλίψη της απώλειας ενός πατέρα. Ο Πάπας Φραγκίσκος ήταν πράγματι πατέρας για εμάς εδώ στην Κύπρο, μας επισκέφθηκε και επέστησε την προσοχή του κόσμου στη θλιβερή μας κατάσταση. Σε αυτό προστίθεται ότι ο Πάπας Φραγκίσκος ξεχώρισε ανάμεσα σε όλους τους παγκόσμιους ηγέτες με την ακούραστη υποστήριξή του στους φτωχούς Παλαιστίνιους στην αφάνταστη φρίκη τους.

Έχουν γραφτεί τόσες πολλές όμορφες και συγκινητικές μαρτυρίες για τον Πάπα Φραγκίσκο την περασμένη εβδομάδα, πολλές από ανθρώπους που δεν μοιράζονται την πίστη μας, αλλά βίωσαν στην ελεήμονα τρυφερότητα του Πάπα έναν πραγματικό πατέρα. Σε αυτή την «Κυριακή του Θωμά» κατά την οποία εμείς οι Μαρωνίτες μοιραζόμαστε το ίδιο ευαγγέλιο με τους Λατίνους αδελφούς και αδελφές μας, ευχαριστούμε τον Θεό για το έλεος του Ιησού Χριστού που ακτινοβολεί τόσο όμορφα δια του Πάπα Φραγκίσκου.

Ο Πάπας Φραγκίσκος ήταν σαν τον καλό Σαμαρείτη, που είδε τις πληγές των σύγχρονων ανθρώπων και των γυναικών και προσπάθησε να τις θεραπεύσει με τον καλύτερο δυνατό τρόπο. Όπως ο Χριστός κάλεσε τον Θωμά να αγγίξει τις πληγές Του, έτσι και ο Φραγκίσκος μας κάλεσε να αγγίξουμε τις πληγές των φτωχών και των απόκληρων. Συχνά, οι χειρονομίες Του και οι προσπάθειές Του παρεξηγήθηκαν και διαστρεβλώθηκαν: όπως ο Ιώβ, υβρίστηκε από τον Ζοφάρ, επιπλήχθηκε από τον Ελιφάς και επικρίθηκε από τον Βιλδάδ (Ιώβ 3-27). Όμως, όπως ένα ποτάμι που έσπασε τις όχθες του, η ατελείωτη ροή των ανθρώπων που ήρθαν να υποβάλουν τα σέβη τους μπροστά στα λείψανα του Φραγκίσκου απέδειξε ότι τα πρόβατα γνωρίζουν τη φωνή του βοσκού (Ιωάννης 10:5)

Ας προσπαθήσουμε αυτή την Κυριακή του Ελέους να κάνουμε ό,τι έκανε ο Φραγκίσκος και να βοηθήσουμε στην επούλωση των πληγών των αδελφών μας. Ας είμαστε επίσης πολύ ενωμένοι με όλους τους καρδιναλίους καθώς ετοιμάζονται να εισέλθουν στο επίσημο κονκλάβιο για να προσφέρουν στην Εκκλησία έναν άλλο Πέτρο. Αμήν.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

“Lord Jesus, make us worthy to celebrate with spiritual hymns your appearance to Thomas and your apostles. You desired to strengthen the faith of your holy Church by inviting Thomas to put his hand in your pure side.” - Opening Prayer

It has been eight days since the celebration of Easter Sunday. In this momentous Jubilee Year of Redemption, we have joyfully shared with our Orthodox brothers and sisters in the common a date of Easter, the feast of Feasts. But this year’s celebrations have experienced the shadow of sorrow at the death of our beloved Holy Father, Pope Francis. While his death was not a surprise, his departure from us to the House of the Father was indeed an occasion to feel the sorrow of losing a father. Pope Francis was indeed a father to us here in Cyprus, visiting us and calling the world’s attention to our sorrowful situation. Added to that, Pope Francis stood out among all the world leaders in his untiring support for the poor Palestinians in their unimaginable horrors.

There have been so many beautiful and moving testimonies written about Pope Francis this past week, many by people who do not share our faith, but experienced in the Pope’s merciful tenderness a true father. On this ‘Thomas Sunday’ in which we Maronites share the same gospel as our Latin brothers and sisters, we give thanks to God for the mercy of Jesus Christ that radiated so beautifully from Pope Francis.

Pope Francis was like the good Samaritan, who saw the wounds of modern men and women and looked to remedy it the best way he could. Just as Christ invited Thomas to touch his wounds, Francis invited us to touch the wounds of the poor and the outcast.

Often, his gestures and his efforts were misunderstood and misrepresented: like Job, he was upbraided by Zophar, scolded by Eliphaz, and criticized by Bildad (Job 3-27). But like a river that has burst its banks, the endless flow of people who came to pay their respects before the mortal remains of Francis proved that the sheep know the voice of the shepherd (John 10:5)

Let us on this Mercy Sunday endeavour to do as Francis did and help heal the wounds of our brothers and sisters. Let us also be very united to all the cardinals as they prepare to enter the solemn conclave to give the Church another Peter.

نحبّك، أيّها البابا فرنسيس، أيّها الخادم الصغير للمحبّة. في كلِّ شيء، أردتَ أن تشبه القدّيس فرنسيس، الذي اخترتَه شفيعًا لك في خدمتك كحبرٍ أعظم. معه، شرعتَ في إعادة بناء الكنيسة في القرن الحادي والعشرين. شكرًا لك.

باسم جميع الموارنة في قبرص، وفي المهجر، وجميع الرجال والنساء ذوي النوايا الحسنة، نرفع صلواتنا وشكرَنا للرب على الهديّة التي كان يمثّلها البابا فرنسيس للكنيسة وللعالم.

رجل الله، راعٍ قريب من المؤمنين، باني هياكل الأجساد، نبي العصر الحديث، قاد الكنيسة بتواضع وشجاعة وتمييز. كان لي شرف معرفته شخصيًا، والتعاون معه خلال السينودس "من أجل كنيسة سينودسية: شركة، مشاركة، ورسالة"، ومشاركته لحظات من الحوار العميق والصادق. كانت نظرتُه الثاقبة تقرأ علامات الأزمنة، وكان قلبُه ينبض بإيقاع أفراح وآلام جميع الشعوب. هنا في قبرص، دعَمَنا في جهودِنا لاستعادة قُرانا في أسوماتوس وآيا مارينا. شكرًا لك.

كان البابا فرنسيس يحمل حبًا عميقًا للعدالة والحقيقة، وكان يقدّرهما فوق كل شيء. كان يعلم جيّدًا أنه حيث لا توجد حقيقة، لا يمكن أن توجد عدالة، والعكس صحيح، وأن الشعوب ستُسحَق تحت نير الطغيان. لهذا دعا وعمل من أجل سينودس السينودسية: كنيسة تستمع، ترافق، وترفع كلّ شخص نحو الكرامة ورحمة الله.

نتذكّر بامتنان زيارتَه إلى قبرص. لقد كانت لحظة نعمة لا تُنسى، لحظة الفقير بين الفقراء. مع الكنيسة اللاتينية والحكومة القبرصية، استقبلنا هذا الرسول للسلام والحوار، الشاهد الذي لا يكلّ عن المصالحة والأخوّة. تركَت زيارته أثرًا لا يُمحى في قلوب شعبِنا، مجدِّدة فينا الأمل والالتزام ببناء الجسور بين الثقافات والتقاليد.

اليوم، نودع روحه إلى الرب، واثقين أنه يسمع هذه الكلمات:

"نِعِمّا أيها العبد الصالح الأمين، كنت أمينًا على القليل، سأقيمك على الكثير. ادخل إلى فرح سيدك)." متى 25:21 (

إرثُه سيبقى حيًا في كنيستنا، في قلوبنا، وفي تاريخ البشريّة.

ارقُد بسلام، أيها الأب الأقدس الحبيب، وصلِّ لأجلنا. آمين.
