Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

A blessed and happy feast of Pentecost to you and your family.

The great liturgical cycle of the Christian calendar arrives at its summit on this glorious feast, the birthday of the Church and the revelation of the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity, the Holy Spirit. Through the Divine Liturgy we are educated, week by week, on the mission of the Son, the Logos made Flesh, the Word sent by the Father. But on this feast of today, so full of splendour and joy, we acknowledge that when the Father sends His Word, he always sends his Breath (CCC #689). When we say something to someone, words issue forth from our mouths, accompanied by our breath. This happens in us imperceptibly, without producing any effect. But God’s Breath is a Divine Person, and the Holy Spirit, goes forth and proceeds and accompanies His Word. He is fire, He is water, He is life. The titles and symbols of the Holy Spirit are abundant and revealing because no single title fully expresses His Person or His mission (CCC #691). Through his grace, the Holy Spirit is the first to awaken faith in us and to communicate to us the new life, which is to ‘know the Father and the one whom he has sent, Jesus Christ’ (CCC #684).

I ask the Holy Spirit to grant us the grace to enter the Heart of Christ. I do this, because our tiny Maronite Church in Cyprus has great need of this grace. Since it is the work of the Holy Spirit to unite us to Christ, may He open our hearts to one another. “It is only by starting from the heart that our communities will succeed in uniting and reconciling differing minds and wills, that the Spirit can guide us in unity as brother and sisters. Reconciliation and peace are also born of the heart. The heart of Christ is ‘ecstasy’, openness, gift and encounter. In that heart, we learn to relate to one another in wholesome and happy ways, and to build up in this world God’s kingdom of love and justice. Our hearts, united with the Heart of Christ, are capable of working this social miracle.” #28, Dilexit Nos, Pope Francis

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

“You shall not hate in your heart anyone of your kin; you shall reprove your neighbour, or you will incur guilt yourself. You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against any of your people, but you shall love your neighbour as yourself: I am the Lord.”

As we can see from Leviticus, the command of Christ, to love one another is not new. What is new is how we are to love. We must love one another just as Christ has loved us. What a pattern on which to imitate!!

Today we begin June, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and we are preparing for the feast of Pentecost (next Sunday!) by living a special decenary of the Holy Spirit … ten days of intense prayer for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the bond of love of the Blessed Trinity, He is the sweet kiss of the Blessed Trinity, uniting the Father and the Son. He is that blessed kiss which royal divinity gave to humanity by means of the Son of God.

The Holy Spirit will only come to those who have great desire for His Person. If we however, criticize one another mercilessly, calumniate one another, slander one another, gossip about one another, back bite one another … how can the Holy Spirit come to us? He is the God of Love and He will read our hearts and will not believe we are sincere if we carry on this way.

Let our every effort, therefore, be this week, be for the mutual upbuilding of one another. Let no sharp words escape our lips and no forked tongue pierce our brother or sister. May the God of Love be so attracted by our kindness that He will be unable to resist coming to us on Pentecost. From the Holy Spirit flows the sweet honey of delights which are found only in God.

Αγαπητά εν Χριστώ αδέλφια,

«Δεν πρέπει να μισείς στην καρδιά σου κανέναν από τους συγγενείς σου- πρέπει να επιπλήττεις τον πλησίον σου, αλλιώς θα υποστείς εσύ ο ίδιος ενοχή. Δεν θα εκδικηθείς ούτε θα κρατάς κακία σε κανέναν από τους δικούς σου, αλλά θα αγαπάς τον πλησίον σου όπως τον εαυτό σου: Εγώ είμαι ο Κύριος».

Όπως βλέπουμε από το Λευιτικό, η εντολή του Χριστού, να αγαπάμε ο ένας τον άλλον, δεν είναι καινούργια.  Αυτό που είναι καινούργιο είναι ο τρόπος με τον οποίο πρέπει να αγαπάμε. Πρέπει να αγαπάμε ο ένας τον άλλον όπως ακριβώς μας αγάπησε ο Χριστός.  Τι πρότυπο για να το μιμηθούμε!!!

Σήμερα ξεκινάμε τον Ιούνιο, αφιερωμένο στην Ιερή Καρδιά του Ιησού και προετοιμαζόμαστε για την εορτή της Πεντηκοστής (την επόμενη Κυριακή!) ζώντας μια ειδική λιτανεία του Αγίου Πνεύματος ... δέκα ημέρες έντονης προσευχής για μια νέα εκπόρευση του Αγίου Πνεύματος.  Το Άγιο Πνεύμα είναι ο δεσμός αγάπης της Αγίας Τριάδας, είναι το γλυκό φιλί της Αγίας Τριάδας, που ενώνει τον Πατέρα και τον Υιό.  Είναι εκείνο το ευλογημένο φιλί που η βασιλική θεότητα έδωσε στην ανθρωπότητα μέσω του Υιού του Θεού.

Το Άγιο Πνεύμα θα έρθει μόνο σε εκείνους που έχουν μεγάλη επιθυμία για το Πρόσωπό Του. Αν όμως εμείς κριτικάρουμε αλύπητα ο ένας τον άλλον, συκοφαντούμε ο ένας τον άλλον, κακολογούμε ο ένας τον άλλον, κουτσομπολεύουμε ο ένας για τον άλλον, δίνουμε πισώπλατα χτυπήματα ο ένας στον άλλον ...

πώς μπορεί να έρθει το Άγιο Πνεύμα σε μας; Είναι ο Θεός της Αγάπης και θα διαβάσει τις καρδιές μας και δεν θα πιστέψει ότι είμαστε ειλικρινείς αν συνεχίσουμε με αυτόν τον τρόπο.

Ας είναι λοιπόν κάθε προσπάθειά μας, αυτή την εβδομάδα, για την αμοιβαία οικοδόμηση του άλλου.  Ας μην ξεφύγουν από τα χείλη μας σκληρά λόγια και ας μην διαπεράσει καμιά διχαλωτή γλώσσα τον αδελφό ή την αδελφή μας. Είθε ο Θεός της Αγάπης να έλκεται τόσο πολύ από την καλοσύνη μας, ώστε να μην μπορεί να αντισταθεί να έρθει σε μας την Πεντηκοστή.  Από το Άγιο Πνεύμα ρέει το γλυκό μέλι των ηδονών που βρίσκονται μόνο στον Θεό. Αγαπητά εν Χριστώ αδέλφια,

«Ο Ελισσαίος παρακολουθούσε και φώναζε, «Πατέρα, πατέρα! Οι άμαξες του Ισραήλ και οι καβαλάρηδες του!' Όταν όμως δεν μπορούσε πια να τον δει, έπιασε τα ρούχα του και τα έσκισε σε κομμάτια».Όσο χαρούμενη και αν είναι η γιορτή της Ανάληψης, γιατί μας γεμίζει με την προσδοκία του ουρανού, υπάρχει και μια δόση μελαγχολίας.

Οι μαθητές είχαν μεθύσει από τη δόξα της Ανάστασης του Χριστού και τις 40 ημέρες της εμφάνισής Του ανάμεσά τους.  Αλλά αυτή η τελευταία αναχώρηση του Ιησού πρέπει να συγκλόνισε τους Αποστόλους: σήμερα, βλέπουν τον αγαπημένο τους φίλο και σύντροφο, να φεύγει για πάντα και βρίσκονται μόνοι τους να αντιμετωπίζουν όλες τις δυσκολίες της ζωής. Ο Κύριός μας συνειδητοποίησε ότι η αναχώρησή Του θα ήταν δύσκολη και γι' αυτό τους υποσχέθηκε τον ερχομό Του Αγίου Πνεύματος, του Παρηγορητή.

Οι μαθητές δεν το κατάλαβαν. Είχαν μεγάλη ανάγκη από τη φώτιση και τη μεταμόρφωση από το Άγιο Πνεύμα για να φέρουν σε πέρας τη μεγάλη αποστολή τους. Επέστρεψαν στην Ιερουσαλήμ, στο δωμάτιο, για να περιμένουν την εκπλήρωση της υπόσχεσης. Αυτή ήταν η πρώτη νουθεσία για την προετοιμασία της Πεντηκοστής. Πρέπει να μιμηθούμε τους μαθητές μετά την Ανάληψη του Κυρίου μας.

Σας ενθαρρύνω να ζήσετε αυτό το ενιαήμερο στο Άγιο Πνεύμα με ανανεωμένο ζήλο.  Πόσο χρειαζόμαστε τη βοήθειά Του για να διακρίνουμε τι πρέπει να κάνουμε στη ζωή μας, στη ζωή των νέων μας, στις οικογένειές μας, στην Αγία Εκκλησία των Μαρωνιτών της Κύπρου!

Ας μιμηθούμε τους μαθητές πριν την Πεντηκοστή: σιωπή, περισυλλογή, ειρήνη μεταξύ μας, συχνή Θεία Κοινωνία, χρήση του Μυστηρίου της Συμφιλίωσης, ανάγνωση των Ευαγγελίων και των βίων των Αγίων, υπηρεσία και αδελφική φιλανθρωπία, και κυρίως αφοσίωση στην Παναγία μας: «Όλοι αυτοί επέμεναν με ένα νου στην προσευχή με ... τη Μαρία, τη Μητέρα του Ιησού». (Πράξεις 1:14).  Αυτά είναι τα χαρακτηριστικά που πρέπει να χαρακτηρίζουν τις επόμενες εννέα ημέρες προετοιμασίας για την έλευση του Αγίου Πνεύματος.  Αμήν.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

“Elisha kept watching and crying out, ‘Father, father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!’ But when he could no longer see him, he grasped his own clothes and tore them to pieces.”

As joyful as the Ascension feast is, for it fills us with the expectancy of heaven, there is also a hint of melancholy. The disciples had been inebriated by the glory of the resurrection of Christ and the 40 days of his appearance among them. But this final departure of Jesus must have struck the Apostles hard: today, they see their dearest friend and companion, going away forever and they find themselves alone to face all the difficulties of life. Our Lord realized that his departure would be difficult, and this is why he promised them the coming of the Holy Spirit, the Comforter.

The disciples did not understand. They had great need of the enlightenment and transformation by the Holy Spirit to accomplish their great mission. They returned to Jerusalem, to the Cenacle, to await the fulfillment of the promise. This was the first novena in preparation for Pentecost. We must imitate the disciples after the Ascension of our Lord.

I encourage you to live this novena to the Holy Spirit with renewed zeal. How we need His help to discern what to do in our lives, the lives of our young people, in our families, in the Holy Church of the Maronites of Cyprus!

Let us imitate the disciples before Pentecost: silence, recollection, peace with one another, frequent Holy Communion, the use of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, reading of the Gospels and the lives of the Saints, service and fraternal charity, and most especially devotion to our Lady: “All these were persevering with one mind in prayer with … Mary, the Mother of Jesus.” (Acts 1:14). These are the characteristics that should mark the next nine days in preparation for the coming of the Holy Spirit.
