14th Sunday of Pentecost

4th Sunday after The Resurrection (John 21 : 1-14)

Homily of His Excellency Msgr. Selim Sfeir Maronite Archbishop of Cyprus

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Jesus rose from the dead and appeared to the disciples on Resurrection Day and the following Sunday. Everyone was convinced of his resurrection, even Thomas, who doubted, touched and testified. But Jesus disappeared from them in his physical form, and now they are far from the empty tomb in Jerusalem, they are in Galilee. What to do now?

While they were in the Garden of Olives, before his arrest, Jesus said to his disciples, "After I have been raised, I will go before you into Galilee." (Matthew 26:32 and Mark 14:28) Then, at dawn on the day of Resurrection, the angel announces Jesus' resurrection to Mary Magdalene and the other Mary, and orders them to tell his disciples that he is going before them to Galilee. (Matthew 28:7 and Mark 16:7) As they were going to tell the disciples, Jesus met them and said, "Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee: there they will see me." (Matthew 28:10) Indeed, the disciples went to Galilee to see Jesus. (Matthew 28:16) It is important to note here that Galilee is a region where live many pagans who do not know God.

The disciples waited for Jesus in Galilee, perhaps becoming impatient after this long wait, as their material responsibilities accumulate, they return to the fishing they had abandoned by following him. "Simon Peter said to them, 'I am going fishing. They said to him, 'We will go with you too. So they went out and got into a boat, and that night they caught nothing." They went back to their daily routine, the light of the resurrection behind them, as if nothing had happened. But this proved to be in vain.

This is where the Lord intervenes by manifesting himself to them, and I don't know if he came with the morning light, or if the morning light came when he appeared to them?

He came to remind them that they can no longer live as they did before the resurrection! He asked them if they had caught any fish in their nets, and the answer was negative, then he commanded them:
"Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find. So they cast it, and they could no longer pull it out, because of the great quantity of fish." Here John remembers the wonderful miraculous catch on the same lake, and his heart cries out as he sees the scene repeated before him again, he says to Peter, "It is the Lord!" And perhaps Peter also remembers that Jesus, at that time, had given them instructions like the ones he gives them today to cast the net, and Peter's response was once, " Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.” And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking." (Luke 5:5-6) What a way to revive the memory of faith.

Jesus came to remind them that on the same shore of the lake, he had called them, saying, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." (Matthew 4:19 and Mark 1:17) That is, they were to bear witness to him and draw their nets full of men for the Kingdom.

We have now passed Easter three weeks ago, and perhaps, like the disciples, we are wondering: what to do now? Let's go back to our old activities!

Yes, we are back to our daily responsibilities, but let's not forget that we are not just "fishing" for our own lives, Jesus has called us to go out into "Galilee", into the land of those who do not yet know him, making us "fishers of men". Let us gather for the Risen One in our nets of witness a "catch". Let us draw men from the waters of the lake of life, so that they may be children of the Kingdom!

Ο Ιησούς αναστήθηκε από τους νεκρούς και εμφανίστηκε στους μαθητές την ημέρα της ανάστασης και την Κυριακή που ακολούθησε. Όλοι πείστηκαν για την ανάστασή Του, ακόμη και ο Θωμάς, ο οποίος αμφέβαλε, άγγιξε και μαρτύρησε. Αλλά ο Ιησούς εξαφανίστηκε από ανάμεσά τους με τη φυσική του μορφή και τώρα βρίσκονται μακριά από τον άδειο τάφο στην Ιερουσαλήμ, βρίσκονται στη Γαλιλαία. Τι να κάνουν τώρα;

Εδώ είναι που παρεμβαίνει ο Κύριος εκδηλώνοντας τον εαυτό Tου σε αυτούς, και δεν ξέρω αν ήρθε με το πρωινό φως ή αν το πρωινό φως ήρθε όταν τους εμφανίστηκε;

3rd Sunday after The Resurrection (Luke 24:13-35)

Homily of His Excellency Msgr. Selim Sfeir Maronite Archbishop of Cyprus The road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35)

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

"But their eyes were prevented from recognizing him." Luke 24:16

It was the evening of the day of the resurrection. The resurrection had taken place, the tomb was empty, the women had verified it, so had the disciples, but Jesus was out of sight. But Jesus was out of sight. Where is he?

"And behold, that same day, two disciples were going to a village called Emmaus, far from Jerusalem"; they left the place of the resurrection and go far from Jerusalem. They leave the other disciples gathered there and set off alone for their village, while the eyes of history as a whole remain fixed to this day on the mystery of the resurrection and the empty tomb there. The mystery of the resurrection has made their compass lose its intuition!

They walk on the wrong path, getting lost, unable to understand what is happening around them. There, on the wrong path, God approaches them, walks with them and talks with them, "But their eyes were prevented from recognizing him."

He speaks to them and explains the Scriptures to them, but they fail to recognize him. During a seven-mile walk, he explains the Old Testament Scriptures to them, and how they refer to him, but their minds are not opened to know him. Why did their eyes not recognize him?

As the day waned and evening fell, and he continued to talk to them as he walked, he pretended to go further, but they asked him to stay with them, so he stopped and went in to stay with them.

Scripture tells us, "While he was sitting at table with them, he took the bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them." Do not these words remind us of an event that touches our faith? Are these not the "verbs" that the priest always performs when he pronounces the words of consecration on God's altar, words that Jesus pronounced at the sacramental Last Supper?

When he "took the bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him." And when they recognized him, they did not stay in Emmaus, but "rising at that same hour, they returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven, and those who were with them, gathered together."

All along the way, they had not recognized him, for they had walked on the wrong way, leaving the Church represented by the apostles gathered in Jerusalem, and moving away from the heart of the crucial event, the resurrection, the foundation of the Christian faith.

We often ask ourselves today: why doesn't Jesus stay with us, where is he? We wish he were still always with us!

I say to you today: let us go back to the empty tomb, let us go back to the Church, let us come out of the wrong paths we have taken in this world, by leaving the resurrection behind us, let us go back and gather again around the apostles and the altar of the Church, to find that Jesus is there, always with us.

Yes, he is with us, for he said, "For where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am there with them." (Matthew 18:20).

He is with us because he promised, " I am with you all the days, until the completion of the age." (Matthew 28:20).

He is with us in the mystery of the Eucharist every time we gather to break bread, only then, as the eyes of the disciples on Emmaus were opened, our eyes are opened to recognize and see him, and we enter into communion with him in the Eucharist.

Ήταν το βράδυ της ημέρας της Aνάστασης. Η Aνάσταση είχε πραγματοποιηθεί, ο τάφος ήταν άδειος, οι γυναίκες τον είχαν ελέγξει, το ίδιο και οι μαθητές, αλλά ο Ιησούς ήταν άφαντος. Πού βρισκόταν;

Τους μιλάει και τους εξηγεί τις Γραφές, αλλά δεν μπορούν να τον αναγνωρίσουν. Κατά τη διάρκεια ενός περιπάτου επτά μιλίων, τους εξηγεί τις Γραφές της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης και πώς αναφέρονται σε Αυτόν, αλλά το μυαλό τους δεν ανοίγει για να τον αναγνωρίσουν. Γιατί τα μάτια τους δεν τον αναγνώρισαν;

Η Γραφή μας λέει: «Ενώ ήταν στο τραπέζι μαζί τους, πήρε το ψωμί, και αφού το ευλόγησε, το έκοψε σε κομμάτια και τους έδωσε». Δεν μας θυμίζουν αυτά τα λόγια ένα γεγονός που αγγίζει την πίστη μας; Δεν είναι αυτά τα «βήματα» που εκτελεί πάντα ο ιερέας όταν προφέρει τα λόγια του καθαγιασμού στο θυσιαστήριο του Θεού, τα λόγια που πρόφερε ο Ιησούς στον μυστηριακό Μυστικό Δείπνο;

Sunday of Thomas (John 20, 26-31)

2nd Sunday after Resurrection, Homily of His Excellency Msgr. Selim Sfeir Maronite Archbishop of Cyprus

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Jesus rose from the dead, yes, and appeared to the gathered disciples, but not to all of them, for Thomas was not with them. When the ten disciples informed Thomas of Jesus' appearance, he did not believe, but said, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands, put my finger in the wounds left by the nails, and put my hand into his side, I won’t believe.” (John 20:25).

Thomas wrestled with his faith for a whole week, until the new Sunday came. What confirms to us that he was in internal conflict with his faith is that he was with the disciples and did not abandon them, and did not abandon the reunited Church. Jesus appeared to them again, addressed Thomas directly with the rebuke of love and not the love of rebuke, and said to him, “Put your finger here. Look at my hands. Put your hand into my side. No more disbelief. Believe!” (John 20:27)

None of the disciples had informed Jesus of Thomas' position or his response, but Jesus, present in Thomas' life, knows his most precise details and wants to heal him of his doubts.

Often we fall into great moments of doubt, where we lose our faith; we feel that God is far from us, and our eyes no longer see him despite his presence and silent protection over us. God's will is not that we remain in doubt; it is not his desire that we live in unbelief, but he leaves us a margin to return to ourselves, to constructive internal struggle, and then he reveals himself to us!

“Put forth your finger here, and see my hands; also put forth your hand, and put it into my side.” With this phrase, Jesus addresses us today as if he were saying to each of us, “I know your doubts, I understand your worries, if you want to believe in me, don't walk away, put your finger forward and touch me, and don't grope with the spirit of the world to come to faith. Open your eyes to my wounds, and do not focus on your wounds, for in my wounds you will find your healing!”

The world cannot lead you to Jesus because it does not know him, “He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world did not know him” (John 1:10), because the world cannot understand God through human logic. Jesus says: “The one who is from the earth belongs to the earth and speaks as one from the earth.“ (John 3:31) As for the apostle Paul, he tells us, ‘In God’s wisdom, he determined that the world wouldn’t come to know him through its wisdom. Instead, God was pleased to save those who believe through the foolishness of preaching.’ (1 Corinthians 1:21)

Jesus addresses Thomas with a phrase whose echoes still shake us, “Do not be unbelieving, but believe.” Just as he wanted Thomas to believe in him, he wants us to believe in him, but the path of faith he charts requires us to come close to him, to put our hands in his, through personal experience that the mind cannot comprehend, and to look at the wounds in his hands and see the marks of the nails.

Seeing these wounds leads our hearts to believe in the love that gave itself on the cross. And touching the nail marks opens our eyes to see what the world cannot. “Soon the world will no longer see me, but you will see me. Because I live, you will live too.” (John 14:19) So only do we say with Thomas to Jesus, “My Lord and my God!”

Amen.

jamais.

Martha and Mary (Luke 10 : 38-42)

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

The Canonization of Blessed Giorgio Frassati and Blessed Carlos Acutis.

Today in the holy city of Rome, our beloved Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV will solemnly elevate for the whole Church two new saints, Giorgio Frassati and Carlos Acutis. Both of these young men died very young, yet in their brief journey, they show that living for Christ takes nothing away from life but fills it with meaning and joy.

The saints are the experts in listening. Like Mary of Bethany, the saints are attentive to the voice of Christ.  They hear Him in the reading of the Gospel, they hear Him in the voice of the Church’s teaching, they hear Him in the voices of the poor and the immigrant, they hear Him in the silence of the Blessed Sacrament.  The saints don’t just hear Jesus, they listen to Him. This work of listening is to discover the voice of Christ in those right beside us, in our families and our place of work. It's also about trying to hear the voice of Christ in our contemporaries, some of whom are far from the Church.  Even in their estrangement, they are creatures of Logos, of reason, and can be unwitting transmitters of the truth.  We need to have hearts and ears capable of hearing Christ speaking from the most unlikely places.

Poor Martha in her busy kitchen of Bethany could hear Christ speaking in the other room, but she was so distracted, she couldn’t listen.  She got focused on her problems, her difficulties and her failures.  She was listening to herself and only hearing Jesus from a distance.

The Divine Logos created the human body as a custom designed parable: we have two ears and one mouth.  God is showing us that we have to do twice as much listening as we do speaking and listening is twice as hard as talking.

May our Blessed Mother, who’s beautiful birthday we shall celebrate tomorrow (for us Maronites, we think of our Lady of Mankee!) on September 8th, intercede for all of us to be betters listeners!

Feast of Saint Michael

Luke (14, 16-24)

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

“Then Jesus said to him, ‘Someone gave a great dinner and invited many.  At the time for the dinner he sent his slave to say to those who had been invited, “Come, for everything is ready now.”

As we join in this blessed celebration of the unbloody renewal of the Sacrifice of Jesus Christ, we are accompanied, as St. John Chrysostom loved to say, with a great host of angels.  This church, dedicated to St. Michael, surely has the right to believe that this great general of the heavenly hosts is present here with us, offering his adoration to the Blessed Trinity.  We salute him and thank him for his protection.

Our Lord in the gospel tells us a parable about someone who gave a great dinner.  Our Lord goes on to describe how the invited guests began to make excuses and exempted themselves from this great feast.  This parable was directed as a reproach to the Jews for their refusal to believe and accept their Messiah.  Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of all the prophecies and promises of the Old Testament.  A remnant of Israel did accept Christ and they became the Catholic Church, but the parable is very explicit, many of Our Lord’s own people did not accept Him.

I would like to update this parable to our own present situation.  Here we are in this venerable old church of St. Michael in Asomatos. The banquet of Our Lord’s Sacrifice, the greatest of all feasts, is set before us.

It is true, we can attend Mass in any other place, for wherever a validly ordained priest with jurisdiction, using the approved words of consecration, with the intention to do what the Church does, and using the appropriate matter of bread and wine, offers the Sacrifice of the Mass, there, we may attend the Mass and receive Holy Communion.  But I want to insist that it is very important to attend Mass here in Asomatos and in our traditional Maronite villages as often as we possibly can.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraph 2471 states: “Before Pilate, Christ proclaims that he ‘has come into the world, to bear witness to the truth.’  The Christian is not to be ashamed then of testifying to our Lord.’  In situations that require witness to the faith, the Christian must profess it without equivocation, after the example of St. Paul before his judges.”

When we think of situations throughout the world, we can easily imagine our far away brothers and sisters in Christ being put to a real test.  But we here in Asomatos we too have a test, a trial of sorts.  Will we testify to our Lord, before our neighbors?  Many who are here in this village now, are not baptized but they have a right to our testimony, our witness.  Our testimony is not political or ideological.  We are not here in an act of defiance or opposition.  We are here because we are part of the Body of Christ, and Christ is always facing the Father.  By looking at the Father with Christ, we see every person as our brother and sister.  This is why no government should ever fear the work of the Church.

Yes, we can obtain the sacraments more conveniently in our local parish churches, but if we neglect our village churches, we are neglecting all the souls who live here.  One of the concrete signs of the fruitfulness of the Sacraments is the building of human fraternity.  The whole world needs more fraternity, friendship and kindness.  Our presence here must be understood from this position.  We are here because only the Risen Christ is capable of alleviating the sufferings of wounded humanity (Pope Francis).  I firmly believe that this position will attract our young people to return to the villages.

If we make the mistake of the persons in the parable of making excuses, “the checkpoint is too long” “there are fewer and fewer people going” “it is no use” … it is because we have lost patience with God.  God is always at work, and often it is like a whisper and very silent, but He is at work.

If we abandon Asomatos, or Karpasha or Kormakitis, it will be a sign that we have grown tired of waiting for God to do something.

When we see our beloved forebears in eternity, they will be eager to see how we have spent our Christian lives.  May we not disappoint them by saying we grew tired of waiting for God to act.

May Mary, Queen of the Angels, and Queen of Asomatos open for us the door of the Holy House of Nazareth so that we may discover how a tiny house, in forgotten village can indeed, change the world.

13th Sunday of Pentecost

The Galilean Women Follow Jesus (Luke 8:1-15)

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

The gospel of this Sunday is a richly embroidered passage which we must meditate upon slowly and with attention. The evangelist St. Luke, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, seeks to enlighten us to the restoration of Creation that takes place in the Redemption of Jesus Christ.

Until the coming of Christ, men and women suffered the effects of original sin in their own gender-specific reality. Men suffered the effects of original sin by their disordered passions, and their darkened minds. So dark was this condition, that men found themselves perpetually at war with themselves and with others, crafting societies built upon slavery and cruelty. In women, the effects of original sin manifested itself in being routinely put down and diminished. Blamed for everything, women before the coming of Christ, lived a hellish existence, treated like slaves of carnal pleasure and cheap labour. Without Christ, the world was in a terrible situation. Today we speak of the many advantages of modern women, but it is only because the light of Christ has illuminated human dignity throughout the last 2,000 years that such a conversation is possible.

At the same time, let us be courageous enough to reject certain ideologies have been smuggled into the Body of Christ that imply women and men are the exact same and that in order to speak of equality, women must do all the same things as men.  How the first women disciples of Christ would have laughed at such silliness!! Women are not men and they must be allowed to exercise the beauty of their feminine qualities in the service of the gospel.

The glory of woman is not that she can do a man’s job; the glory of woman is that she has no desire to do what a man does. Christ our Light shines his light brightly upon the path of modern women, bestowing grace upon them to reject the spirit of revolution and victimhood.  In Christ, woman is illuminated to see her path and with the grace of the Holy Spirit she does not see the word service as slavery but rather discerns the full meaning of it as way to identification with Christ, “who came not to be served, but to serve”.

The Canaanite Woman’s Faith (Matthew 15:21-28)

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

In some translations of the gospel of today the protagonist of the story, the Canaanite Woman, is also called the Syro-Phonecian woman. As children of the Maronite Church, we are delighted to meet this woman. She is our mother in the faith; her Phoenician roots united to her Syriac heritage united to her faith in Christ makes her the porto-Maronite, the first Maronite in the Gospel. St. Matthew perfectly captures the essence of this woman’s faith.

What does St. Matthew tell us about this Syro-Phonecian woman, this proto-Maronite believer?

1) She will do anything for her children. This mother isn’t asking Our Lord for anything for herself but for her poor daughter who has been possessed by a demon. For a Maronite, there is no greater community than that of the family. If we have had a falling out with one or two members of our family, we must try to repair it as best we can. Our spiritual DNA is one that values family above everything; we must do everything we can to repair broken family ties. And she goes further: when it comes to transmitting the faith, this woman will do whatever it takes to help save her daughter. May we all do our part to help introduce our young people to the gospel of Christ and our Catholic faith.

2) She discerned the spiritual war going on. This wonderful woman didn’t run away from her problems but went to straight to Christ because she identified that the root of her problem was spiritual.

As Maronites, we can easily fall into the materialism of our contemporaries and think our difficulties can only be solved politically, or economically. We need to be more discerning and recognize the root of our present crisis is spiritual.

3) She had a holy determination. Her Phoenician roots gave her an energy and persistence that didn’t collapse in face of the apparent obstacle of God’s silence. With a ‘dogged determination’ she followed Christ and did not relent from asking for help. As Maronites, we must learn from this spiritual mother of ours to never cease praying even if our prayers are not immediately answered.

4) She cleverly turned her weakness to her advantage. Christ reminded her that she was not part of the ‘chosen people’ and therefore unable to access his miracles of mercy. But this clever woman turned her weakness to her advantage by using the currency that Christ could not refuse, humility. As Maronites lets imitate our spiritual mother by humbling ourselves often. Let us not let our pride have an easy time even for a single moment.

When you sit with this Gospel, ask the Holy Spirit to enlighten you with even more insights about this remarkable woman. In doing so, we will all become better followers of Christ, better Maronites.

Eleventh Sunday of Pentecost

Jesus and Zacchaeus the Tax Collector St. Luke 19:1-10 (Sunday August 17, 2025)

Today, the Holy Spirit opens for us a delightful event in the public life of Jesus Christ: Zacchaeus, a tax collector, who was determined to see Christ but was unable, because of the crowds, and his own physical limitations – he was short, so he climbed a Sycamore tree to catch a glimpse of this marvellous preacher. His astonishment must have been limitless when Christ caught sight of him and spoke kindly to him and invited himself to dinner at his house.

In first-century Palestine, the tax collector was a despised figure. Hired by the Romans to collect the taxes on the native population, the Romans made no objections to the personal enrichment of the tax collector as he added his own personal tax on the official tax. This made the tax collector loathsome and detested by the population. As perfect God and perfect man, Christ was not unaware of this taboo. Amazingly however, Christ seemed to be perfectly at ease with these characters, even calling a tax collector, St. Matthew to be part of the 12 apostles. Christ did not just merely tolerate these individuals but seemed to go out of his way to engage with them and include them in his work of Redemption.

Our Lord wanted to use their expertise in economic matters to explain in human terms what would be the spiritual economy of His Redemption. Everybody knows that if you spend money on something you should receive value in return. And this is something for each of us to meditate upon in the coming days: God does owe a reward to his faithful servants, because this has pleased God to offer such a reward.  He has not only offered it, but he has also promised it. It is His Will that virtuous living and child-like faith should result in eternal happiness and deliberate wickedness in eternal misery.  In His crazy love for His creatures, God has put Himself in debt because that is His Will.

Let’s spend this week thinking about the rewards that God has promised us if we spend ourselves in virtuous living.  Such beautiful thoughts will move us to become big spenders in this economy of Christ.

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Friday, August 15, 2025

I greet all of you here present at this special Eucharistic celebration on this joyful feast of the bodily assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary in the ancient Maronite church of Kambilis.  This shrine is an expression of the deep faith our Maronite ancestors had in the consoling presence of the Blessed Virgin Mary. They believed what we believe. If they could travel through time to be with us today, they would feel right at home with us as we honour the Mother of God on this special feast. For this is our Catholic Maronite faith:  that after a life spent completely given to God, the Blessed Virgin Mary breathed forth her last breath in a great crescendo of love and God justly rewarded her fidelity by bringing her body and soul into heaven.  The Catechism of the Catholic Church in paragraph 966 states this truth: “Finally the Immaculate Virgin, preserved free from all stain of original sin, when the course of her earthly life was finished, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory.”

And while her assumption into heaven was only just, right and proper for God to reward his holy mother, Our Lord had a very specific reason for this grand gesture. He wanted his Mother to be where He is so that if we seek Mary, we will find Jesus, and by finding Jesus through Mary, we will discover something of what is in the Heart of God, who humbled himself, putting all signs of his divinity, power, and majesty on a shelf, so that he could take the form of a servant.

When we come here to this holy site, soaked with the prayers of centuries of Maronites opening their hearts to Mary, we know that this is how we will find Jesus.  Wherever Jesus is, there is His mother.  Whenever we speak to his mother, she takes it directly to Jesus. The feast we celebrate today dogmatically assures us that this is the truth.

May our Maronite faith be renewed by the simple return to pious traditions of our forefathers! With the prayers we learned as children from our own mothers at the beginning of the day, the reciting of the Angelic salutation at the hour of noon, the custom of greeting and kissing her icons, the daily recitation of the rosary in the family home, the child-like prayers we learned to offer Mary at the end of the day beside our bed … these are tried, tested and true means to find Jesus and to live the life of grace that He obtained for us by dying on the Cross and rising from the dead.

I wish to conclude by asking Mary, Mother of the Maronites and Queen of Kambilis to obtain for us a new springtime of the spirit, especially for our young people.  May our efforts to be instruments of unity and peace bring about a great reconciliation in the land of Cyprus and restoration of our ancient Maronite fervour.
