I greet all of you here present at this special Eucharistic celebration on this joyful feast of the bodily assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary in the ancient Maronite church of Kambilis.  This shrine is an expression of the deep faith our Maronite ancestors had in the consoling presence of the Blessed Virgin Mary. They believed what we believe. If they could travel through time to be with us today, they would feel right at home with us as we honour the Mother of God on this special feast. For this is our Catholic Maronite faith:  that after a life spent completely given to God, the Blessed Virgin Mary breathed forth her last breath in a great crescendo of love and God justly rewarded her fidelity by bringing her body and soul into heaven.  The Catechism of the Catholic Church in paragraph 966 states this truth: “Finally the Immaculate Virgin, preserved free from all stain of original sin, when the course of her earthly life was finished, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory.”

And while her assumption into heaven was only just, right and proper for God to reward his holy mother, Our Lord had a very specific reason for this grand gesture. He wanted his Mother to be where He is so that if we seek Mary, we will find Jesus, and by finding Jesus through Mary, we will discover something of what is in the Heart of God, who humbled himself, putting all signs of his divinity, power, and majesty on a shelf, so that he could take the form of a servant.

When we come here to this holy site, soaked with the prayers of centuries of Maronites opening their hearts to Mary, we know that this is how we will find Jesus.  Wherever Jesus is, there is His mother.  Whenever we speak to his mother, she takes it directly to Jesus. The feast we celebrate today dogmatically assures us that this is the truth.

May our Maronite faith be renewed by the simple return to pious traditions of our forefathers! With the prayers we learned as children from our own mothers at the beginning of the day, the reciting of the Angelic salutation at the hour of noon, the custom of greeting and kissing her icons, the daily recitation of the rosary in the family home, the child-like prayers we learned to offer Mary at the end of the day beside our bed … these are tried, tested and true means to find Jesus and to live the life of grace that He obtained for us by dying on the Cross and rising from the dead.

I wish to conclude by asking Mary, Mother of the Maronites and Queen of Kambilis to obtain for us a new springtime of the spirit, especially for our young people.  May our efforts to be instruments of unity and peace bring about a great reconciliation in the land of Cyprus and restoration of our ancient Maronite fervour.

Αγαπητοί μας εν Χριστώ

Αδελφοί Ιερείς,

υιοί και θυγατέρες αυτής της αγαπημένης Αρχιεπισκοπικής Περιφέρειας

 

Από τη στιγμή που γνωρίσαμε από κοντά την ιστορία των Μαρωνιτών της Κύπρου,

και από τότε που αρχίσαμε να διακονούμε αυτό το ευλογημένο νησί, που κοσμήθηκε με τις προσευχές των πατριαρχών, των επισκόπων, των ιερέων και των  μοναχών μας που ποτίστηκε με τα δάκρυα των μητέρων και των πατέρων μας, και αγιάστηκε με τα βήματα των αγίων, η σκέψη μας είναι προσηλωμένη στο μέλλον αυτής της αυθεντικής μαρωνιτικής παρουσίας

 

Ναι, καθημερινά μας απασχολεί η τύχη των χωριών μας και οι τρόποι επιστροφής σε αυτά, η διατήρηση της ταυτότητάς μας, της γλώσσας, των εθίμων και των παραδόσεών μας.

Αλλά πιστεύουμε βαθιά πως τίποτα από όλα αυτά δεν διαρκεί και δεν καρποφορεί

αν δεν είναι ριζωμένο στην πίστη και δεν στηρίζεται σε αυθεντική πνευματική ζωή.

 

Για αυτό, το διακηρύσσουμε καθαρά:

Η απόλυτη προτεραιότητα της ποιμαντικής μας διακονίας είναι η μέριμνα για την πνευματική ζωή του λαού μας, και η ενίσχυση του δεσμού των Μαρωνιτών της Κύπρου με την Μαρωνιτική Εκκλησία, όχι με λόγια, αλλά με καθημερινό βίωμα:

μέσα από τα Μυστήρια, την προσευχή και την ζωντανή ιερατική διακονία από δικούς τους ανθρώπους, από τα σπλάχνα τους.

 

Αυτός ο δεσμός δεν μπορεί να ολοκληρωθεί και να αποδώσει καρπούς

παρά μόνο όταν οι ίδιοι οι Μαρωνίτες της Κύπρου αγρυπνούν γι’ αυτόν

και συνειδητοποιούν ότι η Εκκλησία δεν είναι απλώς ένα μέρος, αλλά ένας ζωντανός οργανισμός που κτίζεται και υπηρετείται από μέσα.

 

Εδώ αναδεικνύεται η επιτακτική και κρίσιμη ανάγκη για ιερατικές κλήσεις.

Κλήσεις που γεννιούνται από τα βάθη της κοινότητάς μας, από την καρδιά του λαού μας, και φέρουν μέσα τους τη γλώσσα της γης μας, την ιστορία των ανθρώπων μας και την ελπίδα της Επαρχίας μας.

 

Γι’ αυτό θέσαμε ως κύριο στόχο της διακονίας μας

τη δημιουργία πνευματικού περιβάλλοντος που θα γεννά, θα ανακαλύπτει, θα συνοδεύει, θα καλλιεργεί και θα ωριμάζει αυτές τις κλήσεις μέχρι την ολοκλήρωσή τους στο ιερατικό λειτούργημα.

 

Η επιτυχία της αποστολής μας δεν μετριέται με έργα ή με εξωραϊσμούς, αλλά με τον αριθμό των ιερατικών κλήσεων που ξυπνά το Άγιο Πνεύμα στις καρδιές των νέων μας, και με το πόσες ειλικρινείς απαντήσεις "ναι" λέγονται από τους νέους της Κύπρου στον Χριστό.

 

Πόση χαρά θα νιώσουμε,

όταν δούμε να αναδύονται από τους κόλπους των νέων μας

ιερείς, διάκονοι και υπηρέτες του θυσιαστηρίου,

που θα αναλάβουν τη φλόγα, θα υψώσουν τον Σταυρό και θα οδηγήσουν το ποίμνιο στις πνευματικές βοσκές.

 

Εκτιμούμε βαθιά την προσφορά των ιερέων και των επισκόπων που ήρθαν από τον Λίβανο ή από αλλού,

αλλά είμαστε πεπεισμένοι ότι η αληθινή επιτυχία πραγματοποιείται μόνο όταν σπέρνουμε και θερίζουμε στη δική μας γη.

 

Το όραμά μας, η ελπίδα μας και ο αγώνας μας είναι να γίνει η Μαρωνιτική Επαρχία Κύπρου πηγή ιερατικών κλήσεων, όχι μόνο για τις ενορίες μας, αλλά και για ολόκληρη την Μαρωνιτική Εκκλησία παγκοσμίως.

 

Όπως έγινε στο παρελθόν:

με τον Πατριάρχη Κύριλλο τον Κύπριο, που μνημόνευσε ο Πατριάρχης Εστέφαν Δουαΐχι, και με τον πατέρα Ανδρέα Ισκάνταρ, βοηθό του Σιμάαν Σιμάαν στη Λιβανική Σύνοδο, και τόσους άλλους που έδειξαν τι μπορεί να καρποφορήσει αυτό το νησί.

 

Ανάμεσα στα σχέδιά μας είναι και η δημιουργία μιας μαρωνιτικής ιερατικής σχολής στην Κύπρο, ή τουλάχιστον μιας κυπριακής πτέρυγας στο Πατριαρχικό Ιεροσπουδαστήριο, με πρόγραμμα σπουδών προσαρμοσμένο στην ταυτότητα των Μαρωνιτών της Κύπρου, ώστε να ενισχύεται το πνεύμα του ανήκειν στην Αντιοχειανή Μαρωνιτική Εκκλησία.

Αγαπητοί μας,

Δεν πρόκειται για απλές επιθυμίες ή ρομαντικά όνειρα.

Είναι κάλεσμα ζωής και υπαρξιακή ευθύνη.

Αν δεν σπείρουμε σήμερα, δεν θα θερίσουμε αύριο.

Αν δεν αγρυπνήσουμε τώρα, αργότερα θα μετανιώσουμε.

 

Η Κύπρος χρειάζεται ιερείς από τα παιδιά της!

Αυτό είναι το κάλεσμα του Κυρίου στην Εκκλησία μας σήμερα. Θα το ακούσουμε;

 

Σας καλούμε όλους, στο όνομα του Κυρίου και με ποιμαντική αγάπη:

Να ενθαρρύνετε τις ιερατικές κλήσεις χωρίς φόβο και δισταγμό.

Να συνοδεύετε πνευματικά τη νεολαία μας με εμπιστοσύνη.

Να προσεύχεστε καθημερινά για τις ιερατικές κλήσεις.

Να μετατρέψετε τα σπίτια σας σε εύφορη γη για να ανθίσουν ιερείς και μοναχοί.

Να καλλιεργείτε την κουλτούρα της αφιέρωσης και της διακονίας στις οικογένειές σας.

 

Εναποθέτουμε αυτή την πορεία στα χέρια του Κυρίου και επικαλούμαστε τη μεσιτεία της Παναγίας Μητέρας του Ιερατείου, των αγίων Αποστόλων Παύλου, Αποστόλου των Εθνών, και Βαρνάβα, τέκνου της Κύπρου, του Αγίου Μάρωνα πατέρα και προστάτη μας, του Αγίου Σιάρμπελ του ασκητή που φλέγεται με αγάπη για την Εκκλησία, και του Αγίου Ιωάννη Μαρία Βιάννεϊ, του ταπεινού εφημέριου του Αρς και πρότυπου ποιμένα, ώστε να εμπνεύσει ο Κύριος τους νέους μας και να στείλει εργάτες στον θερισμό Του από αυτήν την ευλογημένη γη.

Beloved in Christ,

Our brother priests, sons and daughters of this cherished Eparchy,

 

Ever since we came to know more deeply the history of the Maronites of Cyprus, and since we began to serve this blessed island — adorned by the prayers of our patriarchs, bishops, priests and monks , watered by the tears of mothers and fathers, and sanctified by the footsteps of saints — our hearts and minds have been entirely focused on the future of this authentic Maronite presence.

Yes, we are constantly concerned about the fate of our villages and the paths that might lead us back to them, about how to preserve our identity, our language, our customs, and our traditions. But we believe, with all our hearts, that none of this will last or bear fruit

unless it is rooted in faith and built upon a deep spiritual life.

That is why we proclaim clearly:

Our absolute pastoral priority is the care for the spiritual life of our people, and the strengthening of the bond between the Maronites of Cyprus and the Maronite Church—not just in words, but in daily life, through the sacraments, prayer, and a living priestly presence that comes from within their own community.

This bond can only be fulfilled and bear fruit if the Maronites of Cyprus themselves take responsibility for it, and realize that the Church is not just something they attend —it is something they build and serve!

 

Here lies the urgent and essential need for priestly vocations. Vocations that are born from the heart of our community, that carry in their spirit the language of the land, the history of the people, and the hope of the Eparchy.

 

This is why we have set before us a vital and unwavering goal:

To build a spiritual environment that nurtures vocations, to discover and accompany them, to help them grow, and to lead them to the fullness of the priestly ministry.

 

Our measure of success is not the number of projects we complete, nor the beauty of restored buildings, but rather the number of vocations the Holy Spirit awakens in the hearts of our youth, and the number of sincere “yeses” spoken by young Cypriots to Jesus Christ.

 

How great our joy will be when we see among our youth new priests, deacons, and servers,

who receive the torch, lift the cross, and lead the flock to the green pastures of life.

 

We are grateful for the service of bishops and priests who have come from Lebanon and elsewhere, but we are convinced that true success happens only when we plant and harvest from our own soil.

 

Our ambition, our hope, and our effort is for the Maronite Eparchy of Cyprus to become a source of vocations, not only for our own parishes, but for the service of the Maronite Church throughout the world — as in the days of our ancestors:

Patriarch Cyril of Cyprus, remembered by Patriarch Douaihy, and Father Andraos Iskandar, assistant to Patriarch Sema‘an at the Lebanese Synod, and so many others whose lives testify to the spiritual fruitfulness of this island.

 

Among the projects we are working on is the creation of a Maronite seminary in Cyprus,

or at least a Cypriot section within the Patriarchal Seminary, with a program tailored to the identity of the Maronites of the island, that would strengthen their sense of belonging to the Antiochene Maronite Church.

 

Dear beloved,

These are not passing wishes, but a call to life — a responsibility that concerns our very future. If we do not sow today, we will not reap tomorrow. And if we do not stay watchful now, we will regret it later.

 

Cyprus needs priests from among her sons!

This is the Lord’s call to our Church today… will we respond?

 

We call upon you all, in the name of the Lord and with sincere pastoral love, to:

Encourage priestly vocations without fear or hesitation.

Accompany our youth spiritually with depth and trust.

Pray daily for vocations.

Make every Maronite home fertile ground for vocations and servants of the altar.

Plant a culture of consecration and service within your families.

We place this journey in the hands of the Lord, and we implore the intercession of His Holy Mother Mary, Mother of Priests, of Saints Paul and Barnabas, the Apostle of the Nations and the native son of Cyprus, of Saint Maron, our father and protector, of Saint Charbel, the burning flame of monastic love for the Church, and of Saint John Mary Vianney, the Curé of Ars and model of faithful pastors, that He may inspire our youth and send workers into His harvest from this land He has loved.
