5η Κυριακή της Ανυψώσεως του Τιμίου Σταυρού

Ματθαίος 25: 1-13

Αγαπητά εν Χριστώ αδέλφια,

«Τότε η βασιλεία των ουρανών θα είναι όμοια με αυτό. Δέκα

παρθένες πήραν τα λυχνάρια τους και βγήκαν να συναντήσουν

τον νυμφίο. Πέντε από αυτές ήταν μωρές και πέντε ήταν

φρόνιμες».

Οι εβραϊκοί γάμοι γίνονταν στο σπίτι του πατέρα της νύφης. Οι

παρθένες είναι νεαρά, ανύπαντρα κορίτσια, παράνυμφοι που

βρίσκονται στο σπίτι της νύφης και περιμένουν την άφιξη του

νυμφίου. Σε αυτή την παραβολή, ο Κύριος μας εφιστά την

προσοχή στις λάμπες των παρανυμφών για να μας διδάξει ένα

σημαντικό μάθημα: να είμαστε σε εγρήγορση. Δεν αρκεί να

είμαστε «μέσα» στο Βασίλειο του Χριστού, την Εκκλησία:

πρέπει να είμαστε σε εγρήγορση και να προετοιμαζόμαστε για

την επιστροφή του Χριστού, κάνοντας καλά έργα.

Η ελληνική γλώσσα μας προσφέρει μια πολύ χρήσιμη

πληροφορία: το έλεος, η οποία ετυμολογικά συνδέεται με τη λέξη

για τις ελιές. Το λάδι της ελιάς ήταν το καύσιμο της λάμπας στην

αρχαιότητα. Ο Κύριος χρησιμοποιεί το λάδι των λαμπών ως

σύμβολο της ανάγκης να είμαστε πάντα προσεκτικοί με τα έργα

του ελέους· αυτό είναι το καύσιμο των λαμπών μας.

Το λάδι του Ελέους! Ας το έχουμε σε αφθονία! Το λάδι του

Ελέους στις οικογένειές μας, το λάδι του Ελέους στην Εκκλησία

μας, το λάδι του Ελέους στους χώρους εργασίας μας, στα σχολεία

μας και στις ενορίες μας. Είναι δυνατόν να εξαντληθεί το λάδι

του Ελέους! Όταν θυμόμαστε παλιές πληγές, όταν βλέπουμε

συνεχώς τους εαυτούς μας ως θύματα, όταν αρνούμαστε να

συγχωρέσουμε τους άλλους, έτσι εξαντλείται το λάδι.

«Προσέχετε με την καρδιά, προσέχετε με πίστη, προσέχετε με

αγάπη, προσέχετε με φιλανθρωπία, προσέχετε με καλές πράξεις

(...) ετοιμάστε τα λυχνάρια, φροντίστε να μην σβήσουν (...)

ανανεώστε τα με το εσωτερικό λάδι μιας ευθείας συνείδησης, και

τότε ο Νυμφίος θα σας αγκαλιάσει με την αγάπη Του και θα σας

οδηγήσει στην αίθουσα του συμποσίου Του, όπου το λυχνάρι σας

δεν θα σβήσει ποτέ» (Αγ. Αυγουστίνος, Κηρύγματα 93).

Ας ζητήσουμε από την Παναγία, την σοφή και συνετή Παρθένο,

την πηγή του ελέους του Χριστού, να μας λυπηθεί και να μας

κάνει όλους λίγο πιο ελεήμονες ο ένας προς τον άλλον, αλλά και

προς τον εαυτό μας. Αμήν.

Fifth Sunday of the Holy Cross

Matthew 25 : 1-13

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

“Then the kingdom of heaven will be like this. Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise”.

Jewish weddings were held in the house of the bride’s father. The virgins are young, unmarried girls, bridesmaids who are in the bride’s house waiting for the bridegroom to arrive. In this parable, Our Lord draws attention to the lamps of the bridesmaids to teach an important lesson to be alert. It is not enough to be “inside” the Kingdom of Christ, the Church: one must be on the watch and be preparing for Christ’s return by doing good works.

The Greek language offers us a very helpful insight: the word for mercy is έλεος which is etymologically connected to the word for olives ελιές. The oil of the olive was the fuel of the lamp in antiquity. Our Lord uses the oil of the lamps as symbol of the necessity to be always attentive with works of mercy; this is the fuel of our lamps.

The oil of mercy! May we have it in abundance! The oil of mercy in our families; the oil of mercy in our Church; the oil of mercy in our workplaces; in our schools and in our parishes. It is possible to run out of the oil of mercy! When we remember past hurts, when we constantly see ourselves as a victim, when we refuse to forgive others; this is how we can run out of oil.

“Watch with the heart, watch with faith, watch with love, watch with charity, watch with good works (…) make ready the lamps, make sure they do not go out (…) renew them with inner oil of an upright conscience than shall the Bridegroom enfold you in the embrace of his love and bring you into his banquet room, where your lamp can never be extinguished.” (St. Augustine, Sermons 93)
Let us ask the Blessed Virgin Mary, that wise and prudent Virgin, the reservoir of Christ’s mercy, to have pity on us and make us all little bit more merciful to one another, and even to ourselves.
